The Client

BetMakers Technology Group (ASX: BET) is a global business-to-business provider of wagering and racing technology, supplying platforms, fixed-odds and pari-mutuel betting systems, data services, and racing content to licensed operators, racetracks, and rights holders in more than 30 countries. As a technology company sitting at the center of high-value financial transactions across the wagering industry, BetMakers is a natural target for financially motivated cyber criminals.

The Challenge

BetMakers wasn't facing occasional, opportunistic spam — it was under a sustained, organized campaign. Attackers combined several tactics at once:

  • •Credential phishing — fake login pages built to steal employee credentials
  • •Payment and invoice fraud — urgency-driven scams pushing fund transfers or fake invoice payments
  • •Vendor impersonation — social engineering to change bank details or redirect payments
  • •Executive impersonation — spoofed C-level requests designed to authorize fraudulent transactions
  • •External account takeover — previously breached vendor accounts used to launch further attacks from what looked like a trusted source

Finance staff and senior leaders were repeatedly and deliberately targeted, with activity clustering around BetMakers' financial reporting cycles — exactly when a fraudulent transfer request is most likely to slip through.

The Solution

Since August 2025, BetMakers has run the ShieldForce Advanced Email Security Platform across its email environment. ShieldForce's detection engine and Security Operations Center (SOC) continuously monitor inbound and outbound mail flow for the signatures of BEC and phishing activity — spoofed domains, suspicious URLs, anomalous sending patterns, invoice fraud language, and impersonation of known executives and vendors — automatically flagging or neutralizing malicious messages before they ever reach an inbox.

"The persistent threat of vendor and identity impersonation demonstrates a clear and concerted effort by adversaries to specifically target BetMakers' financial assets and personnel."

Why It Matters for Australian Businesses

BetMakers is headquartered in Australia and operates as a global technology company processing high volumes of financial transactions across regulated markets — a profile shared by many Australian fintech, gaming, healthcare, and professional-services organizations. The same playbook used against BetMakers — credential phishing, spoofed vendor invoices, fraudulent payment requests, and executive impersonation — is used against ASX-listed companies, mid-market operators, and regulated industries across Australia every day.

ShieldForce Australia delivers the same Advanced Email Security Platform and 24/7 SOC coverage shown in this case study, purpose-built for organizations that can't afford for a single fraudulent invoice or spoofed executive email to get through.
